On 2 April 2026, Italy adopted Legislative Decree No. 51 of 2 April 2026, implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 of 18 October 2023 on the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products. The Legislative Decree, published in the Italian Official Gazette on 22 April 2026, entered into force on 7 May 2026.
The new framework extends the system of geographical indication protection beyond the agri-food sector, introducing EU-wide protection for craft and industrial products linked to a specific geographical area. Protection now covers products such as ceramics, textiles, jewelry, glass, wood products and other traditional local products whose quality or reputation is connected to their place of origin.
Legislative Decree No. 51/2026 designates the Italian Patent and Trademark Office (UIBM) as the competent national authority for the registration procedure and introduces enforcement measures and administrative sanctions for infringements. The Legislative Decree also coordinates the new system with the Italian Intellectual Property Code and the EUIPO procedures established under Regulation (EU) 2023/2411.
The new regime is expected to strengthen the protection and international recognition of Italian artisanal and industrial excellence, while also combating counterfeiting and misleading commercial practices connected with geographical origin claims. As of today, the first two applications for craft and industrial GIs concern Murano Glasses and Corals from Torre del Greco.
