INDUSTRIES, TECHNOLOGY | EU Member States Finalise the AI Act

After very long negotiations by the trialogue (consisting of the European Commission, Council and Parliament) in late December, on 4 February 2024 all 27 EU Member States finalised and approved the AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI regulation. It is based on a regime that distinguishes between different degrees of risks posed by AI systems and it grades the different obligations accordingly, including bans for certain technologies. The European Parliament shall now hold a vote on such text, which is likely to happen in April 2024. At this stage, it seems to be a mere formality. The date of application of the finalised AI Act will follow a precise timetable, with a transition period for the introduction of bans beginning from the publication of the AI Act in the Official Journal of the European Union.
