ESG | The EU Parliament approved the postponement of EU rules on sustainability

On 3 April 2025, the European Parliament approved the proposal issued by the European Commission to postpone the date starting from which certain sustainability obligations shall apply; namely, some obligations set forth in Directive (EU) No. 2022/2464 of 14 December 2022 (on corporate sustainability reporting) will apply starting from 2028 or 2029, depending on the size of the company (instead of 2026 and 2027) and those provided under Directive (EU) No. 2024/1760 of 13 June 2024 (on corporate sustainability due diligence) will apply starting from 2028 (instead of 2027).

The postponement is part of a broader package of measures approved by the European Commission on 26 February 2025, which aims to simplify EU rules on sustainable finance reporting, sustainability due diligence, the EU taxonomy, and the carbon border adjustment mechanism. This new package of measures includes some amendments to the scope and content of sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements in order to reduce the complexity of EU obligations for smaller companies.
