CORPORATE | New deadline extensions for mandatory catastrophe insurance for SMEs

Pursuant to Law Decree No. 39 of 31 March 2025, published in the Official Gazette No. 75, the deadline for complying with Italy’s new mandatory catastrophe insurance requirements has been further extended for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Initially, according to Legislative Decree No. 202 of 27 December 2024 (the so-called Milleproroghe Decree), all companies were required to comply with the obligation to offer catastrophe coverage by 31 December 2024. However, due to delays in the implementing the regulatory decree and feedback from the State Council, this deadline was postponed to 31 March 2025 for all businesses.

Now, under Law Decree No. 39 of 31 March 2025, the deadlines for SMEs have been further extended as follows:

  • 1 October 2025 for medium-sized enterprises;
  • 1 January 2026 for small and micro enterprises.

The original 31 March 2025 deadline remains applicable to large enterprises.

The obligation for insurance companies to offer catastrophe coverage remains unchanged.
