The EU Council and Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the Artificial Intelligence Act

On 9 December 2023, after a 3-day marathon talks, Parliament and Council negotiators reached a provisional agreement on the so-called Artificial Intelligence Act, a regulation with the aim of ensuring that AI systems placed on the European market are safe and respect EU fundamental rights and values. The provisional agreement provides that the Artificial Intelligence Act will apply two years after its entry into force, with some exceptions for specific provisions. Following such provisional agreement, work will now continue at technical level in the upcoming weeks to finalise the details of the new regulation. The final text will then have to be formally adopted by both Parliament and Council to become EU law.
